Public Transport Advocacy in Bukit Damansara: Navigating Development and Congestion Concerns
The proposed redevelopment of Wisma Damansara in Bukit Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, has sparked a debate among residents and stakeholders, with a focus on the potential impact on public transport usage and traffic congestion.
The key issue, according to Zac Cheong, chairman of Malaysian Land Public Transport Fans, is the placement of additional population density. He suggests that the proximity of Wisma Damansara to the Semantan MRT station could be a game-changer for public transport.
"The Semantan MRT station is within walking distance of Wisma Damansara, and improving bus frequency and first-mile infrastructure will ensure its continued vibrancy as a transit hub," Cheong explained. This approach could encourage more people to use public transport, reducing the strain on roads.
Urban design consultant Ernest Wong echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the role of residents in advocating for higher public transport usage. He highlighted the short distance between the Semantan MRT station and Wisma Damansara, approximately 400 meters, but noted that walkability in the area needs improvement.
"Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) could mandate the developer to enhance connectivity as part of the project's requirements, ensuring a seamless experience for pedestrians," Wong suggested. This could involve making the route safer and more accessible for those walking from Wisma Damansara to the MRT station.
However, former Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, a Bukit Damansara resident, expressed concerns about the existing public transport system's capacity. He believes that the current system may struggle to cope with the potential increase in traffic after the redevelopment.
Ravi Markandu, deputy president of Persatuan Pemilik Rumah Bukit Damansara, shared similar worries. He recalled how previous development projects disrupted the bus system in the area, with buses being rerouted to Jalan Dungun, causing significant gridlock during peak hours.
BRDB Developments Sdn Bhd, the developer of the proposed project, acknowledged the need for sustainable and community-focused redevelopment. They emphasized their commitment to creating a walkable city with well-connected public transport and green public spaces.
"Our goal is to blend heritage with modern urban design, creating shared spaces that connect and enliven transit zones," the developer stated. The aim is to reduce car dependency while providing a safer, more seamless pedestrian experience for the community and commuters alike.
The proposed redevelopment of Wisma Damansara into a residential and commercial retail hub with multi-storey towers has been previously reported by StarMetro. The 16-storey Wisma Damansara, built in 1970 by Selangor Properties, holds historical significance as the first commercial office building in Bukit Damansara but has been vacant for several years.
