KSCA Elections Postponed: What's Going On? | Cricket News (2025)

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) elections have been postponed, but the reasons behind this delay are far from simple. Originally slated for November 30th, the elections are now tentatively scheduled for December 30th. But what caused this unexpected shift? Let's dive in.

Dr. B. Basavaraju, the electoral officer, made the call to postpone the elections. He cited two primary reasons: an active court injunction and a lack of clarity from the KSCA's Managing Committee. In a letter dated November 17th, Dr. Basavaraju explained that he'd requested clarification on several election-related matters on November 14th and 15th. However, the response he received, along with its attachments, didn't adequately address the existing concerns.

But here's where it gets controversial... The injunction, issued by the Hon'ble Trial Court in O.S. No. 7680/2025, remains in effect, with the next hearing scheduled for December 16th. Dr. Basavaraju emphasized his responsibility to ensure a free, fair, and legally compliant election. He felt 'constrained' to defer the process until the legal and administrative issues were resolved.

This postponement hasn't been taken lightly. Venkatesh Prasad, who is running for KSCA president with the support of several former India cricketers, expressed his shock and disappointment. He stated, "We were stunned to learn that the elections have been deferred to 30 December. The primary focus here should be cricket, not politics." He emphasized the group's dedication to reviving top-level cricket at Chinnaswamy Stadium, aiming to bring back international matches and IPL fixtures.

Vinay Mruthyunjaya, former treasurer of KSCA and a part of Prasad's group, placed the blame squarely on the Managing Committee, stating that the Electoral Officer's repeated requests for information went unanswered.

The KSCA, however, has offered its perspective. CEO Shubhendu Ghosh stated that a long-time KSCA member, A.V. Shashidara, obtained an interim order from the Trial Court. According to the KSCA, this order led the electoral officer to halt the election process. The KSCA has filed a writ petition in the High Court to set aside the order. Ghosh expressed hope that the election would proceed as planned, with only a change in the scrutiny date.

And this is the part most people miss... Shashidara has since responded, clarifying that the KSCA's portrayal of the situation is inaccurate. He filed a civil suit challenging the Managing Committee's interpretation of the nine-year term rule. Shashidara stressed that he never sought a stay on the elections, his suit solely focuses on the Managing Committee's interpretation. He added that the Civil Court's interim order only stayed the circulation of certain minutes, not the elections themselves. Shashidara pointed out that the KSCA proceeded with an affidavit in the AGM book, relying on the disputed interpretation, even after being informed of the order. The High Court later set aside the stay but made no comments on the issue's merits.

Shashidara highlighted that the High Court directed the KSCA to proceed with the elections as scheduled. He believes the postponement is unrelated to his suit, calling the KSCA's actions a disregard for the court's order and established norms.

So, what do you think? Is the postponement justified, or is it a sign of deeper issues within the KSCA? Do you agree with Venkatesh Prasad's focus on cricket, or are there other factors at play? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
